Stereotypes about ‘Terroni’: Benvenuti al Sud/Welcome to the South

Welcome to the South or Benvenuti al Sud (2010) directed by Luca Miniero and written by Massimo Gaudioso is the remake of the French film Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis (2008) by Dany Boon and obtained ten 2011 David di Donatello nominations with the award for Best Supporting Actress to Valentina Lodovini. The movie tells the story of Alberto Colombo (Claudio Bisio), Italian postmaster in Brianza, who pretends to be disabled for a transfer to Milan. Things are not going as planned; Alberto will be punished a transferred to the Campania region to direct the post office of the small town called Castellabate. Immerse yourself in this funny story to find out what will happen to the poor northerner in Neapolitan lands. I loved the theme of the prejudices between north and south of Italy and the stereotypes about ‘terroni’ considered as ‘mama’s boys’, thieves, Camorra, obese and ugly, but above all coffee lovers, good Mediterranean food and warm welcome. The well-known Neapolitan dialect is fascinating and well explained by Alberto's colleagues as the latter doesn’t understand it very well and the phrase “when a foreigner comes to the south cries twice: when he arrives and when he leaves” is significant.
